About The Opportunity

The Chief Manufacturing Engineer (CME) is the technical leader for Manufacturing Engineering and is responsible for the manufacturing definition and ME related activities within the program / value stream through its life cycle. The CME leads the multi-functional Manufacturing Engineering (ME) team that is deployed into the program / values stream and acts as the primary representative for ME at all program / technical reviews & externally (with customer & suppliers).Will ensure the manufacturing system meets stakeholder requirements including; technical compliance; adherence to ME processes and standards and compliance business case (including quality; delivery and cost).


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of a manufacturing system that fulfils all stakeholder requirements including;

  • Quality, Health & Safety, design, producibility, business case etc.

  • Responsible for the manufacturing process definition and ME related activities within the value streams and throughout the program lifecycle.

  • Responsible for efficient factory layout to meet safety, quality, environmental and business case requirements.

  • Will represent M.E. at internal program / technical reviews & externally with Customer & suppliers, ensuring that the manufacturing definition meets stakeholder requirements.

  • Will ensure the adherence to ME processes and standards.

  • Drives concurrent engineering and participates in design reviews to meet business case targets, including manufacturability.

  • Works with other Program Chief MEs to ensure engineering resources are best utilized based on skills, experience and knowledge required

  • Understands and can help derive associated measures such as:

  • Product safety

  • Quality (including right first time measures)

  • Delivery (completion of the M.E. related activities in line with the agreed schedule)

  • Cost (NRC & RC)

  • Product development including;

  • Selection of capable manufacturing processes

  • Validating the capability of the process and/or equipment

  • Including that all process / test requirements, relating to the manufacturing system, are suitably addressed

  • Introduction of new technology in line with the Program / Value Stream requirements

  • Supporting the Make v Buy & subsequent supplier selection process

  • Ensure adherence to all applicable Quality processes and procedures including;

  • All regulatory laws and guidelines are complied with

  • Customer requirements (where mandated)

  • Export Control and ITAR requirements

  • Leadership of the deployed M.E. team including;

  • Ensuring that safe working practices are maintained at all times

  • Daily management of the M.E. team.

  • Allocation of task in line with the agreed schedule / budget

  • Ensuring that all M.E. related reviews (internal & external) are completed to schedule and that the inputs / outputs are managed to the defined process

  • Inclusive of capturing / auctioning Risk and Lessons Learnt

  • Acting as the M.E. lead with;

  • The Program Management / Value Stream leaders

  • Other internal disciplines

  • The customer

  • The nominated supply chain

  • Support the Design Chief Engineers on their technical reviews (internal & external) as required

  • Travel up to 25% domestically or internationally, to support occasional technical meetings with suppliers, customers and other company facilities to ensure program success.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or similar field OR, in lieu of degree, High School diploma/equivalent and 15+ years of aerospace composites manufacturing engineering experience may be considered.

  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience in an aerospace manufacturing or similar environment including;

  • Budget, cost schedule, and resource management

  • Acting as a manufacturing engineering leader / authority on an aerospace program

  • Manufacturing engineering related process and data management, with related periodic reporting

  • Aerospace industry standards such as AS9100, National Aerospace Standards, SAE, US mil-standards, ISO9001, Nadcap, etc.

  • Experience with OEM (Airbus, Boeing, Bell Helicopter, Sikorsky Helicopter, Lockheed Martin, etc.) supplier quality and certification requirements

  • 2 years of managing direct reports, including hiring and performance management.

  • 5 years composite manufacturing experience with demonstrated expertise in composite manufacturing processes and best practices.

  • Due to export compliance, must be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident

Additional Qualifications:

  • GKN experience is strongly preferred

  • Experience with rotorcraft manufacturing is strongly preferred

  • Ideal candidate will have a certification as a Lean / 6σ practitioner (greenbelt as minimum) and demonstrated application of Continuous Improvement / Lean tools and techniques with proven results.

  • Desire 15-20 years practical experience/expertise in composite manufacturing.

  • Working with diverse skill sets and teams to accomplish results.

  • A thorough working knowledge of the various manufacturing production systems such as SIOP, MES, MRB, Planning, and QMS.

  • Good interpersonal team working skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.

  • Has the ability to work successfully within a matrix managed business, able to influence without direct authority.

  • Proactive in regard to new developments of expertise required.

  • Self-motivated, resourceful, strong minded and committed.

  • Innovative toward all aspects of the job.

  • Flexible and capable of working in a complex environment.

  • Good reporting and communication skills on project status and progress.

  • Capable of interfacing professionally with customers and suppliers.
