WSP USA Site Inspector, Land Development and Municipal Engineering in Cornwall, Ontario

The Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking a Site Inspector to join our Land Development and Municipal Engineering Team, located at our Kingston office. Reporting to a Senior Technical Engineer, this position will be responsible for the field review of construction projects to ensure Quality Assurance is obtained for municipal engineering and land development projects. This role will also include surveying, and contract administration. The opportunity will have a focus on local projects within Kingston and surrounding areas .

A day in the life:

A day in the life of a site inspector is a blend of precision, vigilance, and communication . It begins with a thorough review of contract drawings and specifications, ensuring a clear understanding of the day's objectives. The inspector interprets the intricate details of these documents, aligning them with the contractor's obligations and the client's responsibilities. The inspector frequents the construction site, adhering to a strict schedule to inspect the work that involves meticulous measurement and examination to confirm adherence to the contract.

Infractions, should they arise, are not merely noted but acted upon decisively. The site inspector is always conscious of safety , security, and operational efficiency, addressing any issues that compromise these standards. Quality assurance is paramount, and the inspector is integral in administering construction contracts to uphold this quality. They prepare detailed progress reports, supported by written and photographic evidence, to document the day's findings.

The role extends beyond the confines of the site; the inspector is a crucial liaison . They facilitate communication between the contractor, internal staff, utility companies, and local municipalities, ensuring a harmonious workflow. Each day concludes with a reflection on the progress made and preparation for the challenges of the next, embodying the meticulous nature of a site inspector's responsibilities.

In addition to these responsibilities, a site inspector is prepared to take on other duties as required, showcasing their versatility and commitment to the team. This may include assistance with preparing and responding to; change notices, change orders, site instructions, requests for information, site instructions, cost estimates and quote reviews. Their contributions are essential to the successful implementation of validating quality assurance on construction projects. They also understand that construction projects may require additional efforts outside of the normal work hours.

What you’ll bring to WSP…

  • Graduated from a three (3) year college program in Civil Engineering Technology or an equivalent program;

  • Eligible to obtain Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation, or interested in obtaining C.E.T. designation;

  • A minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in the inspection of large, multi-discipline and/or heavy construction capital projects, site developments and subdivision projects with respect to grading, servicing, utilities and roadway construction;

  • Knowledge of City of Kingston Design Standards and specifications;

  • Previous experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D would be considered an asset;

  • Must have sound knowledge of construction inspection and management principles, practices and techniques, as well as knowledge of construction products, materials and equipment;

  • Must have a good understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and regulations for construction projects, as well as the safety policies and procedures applicable to the construction project;

  • Must possess sound judgement; strong organizational, administrative, observational and problem-solving skills; effective interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills;

  • Familiarity with Builterra would be an asset;

  • Experience completing topographic surveys would be an asset;

  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS) and Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD);

  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal, including teamwork and interpersonal abilities; and a

  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.
