SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY (NRM) Sr Engineer - Metrology Engineer (Entry-Level) in Bloomington, Minnesota

About our group: The Mechanical Process Development Team works on further developing the processes of recording head fabrication to improve Hard Disc Drive capacity and improve reliability. Our group focuses especially on the topography of the recording head transducer elements and the thin films that are applied to the Air Bearing Surface of the recording head. About the role - you will: Develop and deploy state-of-the-art metrology capabilities for characterization of the topography of recording head transducer materials. Focus will be with scanning probe microscopy e.g. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and also include additional metrology methods including: X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray reflectometry (XRR), Ellipsometer, and film stress metrology. Explore new methods to deliver improved capability. Refine and extend capability of existing equipment/methods. Develop fundamental understanding between the measurement methods, process methods, and the product. Manage projects (design and execution of experiments, specification of equipment, communication of progress, and recommendation of project direction) from concepts and feasibility through integration into pre-production. Collaborate within our focused team as well as with broader teams across the globe. Leverage statistical methods to provide confidence in project outcomes through comprehensive data analysis. Create technical documentation to communicate results to the engineering community and share improvements with factories in Asia. About you: Highly motivated and self-directed. Hands-on problem solver who can manage multiple projects. Ability to communicate and collaborate with global teams. Ability to build relationships and influence cross functional teams. Data analysis experience using Excel, JMP, Minitab, Matlab, etc. Ability to be flexible and work effectively with ambiguity and change. Your experience includes: Knowledge of metrology equipment (particularly scanning probe microscopy) best practices, and innovative thinking to adapt the methodology to be most effective for Seagate. Knowledge of deposition and characterization methods. Experience with SPC, calibration techniques, troubleshooting, and Six Sigma. Competency in MS office applications. Ph.D. in physics or one of the following engineering programs: mechanical, electrical, or materials science. Must have completed or be pursuing a PhD degree. Location: Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
